After the UAE Summer: 10 Yacht Checks Before the Boating Season

Summer in the Gulf is the hardest season of the year on a yacht. In August, sea water off Dubai averages around 33°C and can pass 34°C. Deck surfaces bake in direct sun, and many boats sit on their berths for weeks without running. When cooler weather arrives in October, the Dubai boating season begins. Owners who check their yacht in September avoid the breakdowns, the waiting lists at busy yards and the ruined first weekends on the water.

Here are the 10 checks our team at Emirates Yachting Services recommends before the season starts.

1. Inspect the hull below the waterline

Warm water speeds up marine growth. Just a few weeks of slime and early barnacle growth adds drag, raises fuel use and can block the cooling-water intakes. Haul out, or send a diver down for a quick look first. If the antifouling is worn through, deal with it now, before the yards fill up. Our guide Antifouling in the UAE: How Often Does Your Yacht Really Need It? explains the timing.

2. Check the engine cooling system

Hot sea water makes marine engines work harder. Replace or inspect the raw-water impellers, clean the sea strainers and check the heat exchangers for scale. A tired impeller is one of the most common causes of overheating on the first trip of the season.

3. Replace sacrificial anodes

Warm, salty water speeds up galvanic corrosion. Check the zinc or aluminium anodes on the shaft, trim tabs and hull. If they are about half worn, replace them. It costs very little and protects parts that are expensive to replace.

4. Test the batteries and charging system

Heat shortens battery life, especially on boats that were left plugged in or unused all summer. Load-test the batteries, check the terminals for corrosion and make sure the shore-power and charger connections are sound.

5. Service the air conditioning and chillers

The AC systems have just come through their heaviest workload of the year. Clean the filters and strainers, check refrigerant performance and look for leaks or noisy pumps. That way the system will be ready for warm October afternoons and the next summer.

6. Look at the gelcoat and paintwork

UV exposure causes oxidation, chalking and fading, and small cracks let water into the laminate. A compound, polish and protective coat restores the shine. Chips and cracks should be repaired before the season, not after.

7. Check the teak deck

Heat dries out teak and the caulking between the planks. Look for lifted seams, grey or cracked planks and loose plugs. If you catch them early, re-caulking and sealing cost far less than replacing planks.

8. Inspect the rigging on sailing yachts

Stainless fittings, swages and chainplates can crack from fatigue and corrosion. Before the season's first strong Shamal wind, check the standing rigging, turnbuckles and mast step. Our rigging team can inspect, tune or de-rig the mast when that's needed.

9. Test the safety equipment

Check the expiry dates on flares, fire extinguishers and life-raft servicing. Test the bilge pumps and float switches, the navigation lights and the VHF. Also make sure your registration and cruising documents are up to date for the season.

10. Book your haul-out early

October to April is peak season, and yard slots fill fast once the weather cools. If your checks turn up hull, antifouling or painting work, booking in September means the yacht will be ready for the season, not stuck in a queue during it.

Why owners choose EYS for pre-season work

Emirates Yachting Services operates its own shipyard in Dubai Maritime City, with a hydraulic trailer that lifts yachts of around 50–60 ft. For antifouling and hull work we follow a full preparation process: sanding to the gelcoat, then primer, sealer and antifouling, with two coats of each. That preparation is what makes the finish last through a Gulf summer.
